Chapter Fourteen

Matt perched on the edge of the desk. “What do you want, Stacey? I told you I have a guest. What’s so important that it couldn’t wait?”

“I want to borrow some money from you.”

Matt groaned inwardly, but he might as well get used to requests for money. The term “low maintenance” had never described Stacey. “Why do you need money?”

“I put a deposit on an apartment, and it left me a little short.”

“How much do you need?”

“Five hundred ought to do it,” Stacey said. “I need to stock the pantry and get some diapers and baby formula for Tyler.”

Matt withdrew his checkbook from his pocket and wrote the check. “Have you seen a lawyer yet?”

“Not yet,” Stacey replied as she stashed the check in her purse, “but I will next week. Thanks for the loan. I'll pay you back. I’m not trying to bleed you, Matt. It’s fair for you to help with Tyler, but I don’t expect you to support me.”

Matt hoped not, but he had no idea whether she meant what she said. He had spent a lot of money on Stacey while they were dating; she might expect it now as well.

Business concluded, he hustled Stacey out of the study in a hurry. Violet resented Stacey, and he’d hate to give her any more reason to be angry with him.

He opened the study door for Stacey and saw that only Rod and Tyler remained in the living room. Stacey gave both of them a dazzling smile. “Give Grandpa and Daddy a kiss,” she ordered.

Both Matt and Rod kissed Tyler. Then Matt helped Stacey with the car seat. He hurried back inside to find Violet. “Dad, where’s Violet?”

“She left.” He picked up his coffee cup and took a sip of his coffee.

“She left?”

Rod nodded. “Yes, you hurt her feelings. She didn’t appreciate Stacey touching you or speaking privately with you. She has that right now, not Stacey.”

Matt fell into the rocker by the fireplace. “I’d have to be an idiot not to know Stacey upset Violet, but I didn’t expect her to leave without even saying goodbye.” He stood up. “I’ll call her.”

“You might want to consider going over there,” Rod commented mildly. “Of course, she may shoot you.”

“Dad, what else can I do? Now that I know about Tyler I can’t just ignore him, and since Stacey’s his mother I have to deal with her too.”

Rod smiled and patted Matt’s knee. “Naturally, you have to provide for Tyler, but you should minimize contact with Stacey all you can. However, Violet needs to understand you will have to see Stacey. Talk to her about it. Reassure her.”

“I’ll go over there right now,” Matt promised.

“If I were you, I’d change my shirt.”

Matt frowned. “Tyler doesn’t like me.”

“You’ll grow on him.”

“I hope so,” Matt answered, but so far he and his son hadn’t connected at all.

He had already left the room when his father called, “I’ve surprised myself, Matt.”

Matt went back into the living room. “What do you mean?”

“Six
